Altman Says Trump Administration's Voluntary Review of Astra Model is Productive
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the voluntary review of the upcoming Astra model by the Trump administration has been a productive process. He noted that as artificial intelligence capabilities advance, communication with global government officials becomes increasingly important. Astra is OpenAI's first model to be rated with a critical cybersecurity capability level. OpenAI emphasizes that such models require stricter safety measures before development and release. The Trump administration has established a voluntary framework that allows for reviews before the release of certain advanced AI models, granting government officials access to the model for up to 30 days. Altman confirmed that the Trump administration has reviewed Astra and stressed that the process is voluntary in nature. He pointed out that as model capabilities improve, close collaboration with security agencies in the U.S., U.K., and other regions will become more important, and Astra represents a significant step forward.
