AMD Mid-Level Managers Waste Engineer Resources on Non-Customer Projects
SemiAnalysis points out that AMD's mid-level managers are wasting the time of over 20 engineers on a side project called the ATOM Inference Engine, which has almost no customers. Engineers have expressed that they are unable to discuss their concerns due to internal office politics and the support of mid-level management. The engineers involved in this project should have been focused on developing customer inference engines like vLLM and SGLang. SemiAnalysis also mentions that mid-level managers responded by citing Alibaba as the sole customer, but investigations show that Alibaba has only deployed ATOM in a limited capacity and not in its main business units. AMD's management has diverted resources away from engineers supporting vLLM and SGLang to expand their own influence, which is highly disrespectful to the engineers.
