Bitcoin Prediction Models Struggle to Exceed Simple Benchmarks

By: www.tokenpost.kr|2026/09/06 07:18:51

Bitcoin (BTC) price prediction models have evolved using scarcity, on-chain indicators, power laws, and machine learning, yet they repeatedly fail to surpass simple benchmarks in actual validation. CryptoSlate reported that all models should be compared against a naive benchmark. Carlos Barcelo noted in a 2026 paper that it is difficult to find studies that reliably exceed the naive benchmark over 1 to 6 months. The naive benchmark represents today's price or a 0% return, and prediction models must demonstrate excess performance against this benchmark. The Bitcoin market is not a fixed laboratory; participants, liquidity, and regulatory environments are constantly changing. Barcelo suggested walk-forward validation, multiple holdout periods, naive benchmark comparisons, and accounting for transaction costs. Austin Shelton concluded in a 2024 paper that stock-to-flow and Metcalfe's Law explain Bitcoin returns, but out-of-sample predictive power is limited. Overfitting issues also arose in machine learning studies, indicating that strategies fail when realistic trading fees are considered. Bitcoin prediction models must be validated separately for statistical accuracy and economic profitability, and this distinction is important for Korean investors as well. While the long-term trend lines of price models can serve as reference materials, it is essential to verify out-of-sample validation and cost considerations before using them as short-term trading signals.
