Bitcoin Red Team Files 4,962 Security Findings Across 390 Projects
The Bitcoin Red Team has reported 4,962 security findings across 390 Bitcoin projects in approximately 30 hours, utilizing AI agents for a large-scale ecosystem audit. The initial report, published by pseudonymous developer calle, indicates that 85 findings are classified as critical severity and 635 as high severity, representing 14.5% of the total findings with an average of 1.85 serious issues per project. The team, now consisting of 16 members, logged 166 findings per hour, with 91% of findings generated through automated scans. Calle noted that contributors use various review methods, leading to diverse bug discoveries. Privacy and coinjoin tools had the highest proportion of critical findings at 24%, followed by swaps and exchanges at 21%. Only 19 projects, less than 5% of those reviewed, have disclosed findings upstream. Calle expressed regret if the reports added stress to maintainers, emphasizing the importance of rapid validation by project owners. The campaign highlights ongoing security concerns in Bitcoin, particularly after Coinkite's Coldcard wallet incident, which resulted in a loss of 130 million dollars due to a firmware flaw. Ledger's CTO remarked that AI is now being used to identify vulnerabilities in crypto code at machine speed, underscoring the need for defense mechanisms to keep pace with attackers.
