BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF Outperforms S&P 500 by 1.6 Percentage Points
BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF has recorded a return of 67.74% since its launch on January 11, 2024, surpassing the Vanguard ETF tracking the S&P 500, which achieved a return of 66.14%, giving it a lead of 1.6 percentage points. Despite this cumulative outperformance, IBIT has exhibited greater volatility, with a maximum drawdown of 53.3% from October 6, 2025, to June 30, 2026, while VOO experienced a maximum drawdown of 18.69% from February 19, 2025, to April 8, 2025. Comparatively, investors who bought both funds at the time of IBIT's launch have seen similar cumulative results as of August 31, but Bitcoin ETF holders have had to endure a loss of over half their value since the peak. When the U.S. spot ETF launched in January 2024, Bitcoin was trading close to $47,000, rising to about $126,000 in 2025, before falling to nearly $58,000, and is now recovering to around $77,000, erasing IBIT's performance advantage during Bitcoin's historical peak. BlackRock recommends that investors seeking long-term diversification and return potential allocate 2% to BTC. IBIT has an asset size of approximately $60 billion, with net inflows of about $63 billion since its launch.
