Closure of Illia Highway and part of Cantilo Avenue due to Pampa Underpass works
The Illia Highway, heading towards the province of Buenos Aires, and a section of Cantilo Avenue will remain closed during the night of Friday, August 7, due to the progress of the works on the Pampa Underpass and Pedestrian Ring.
During the closure, there will be modifications to the traffic flow on the Paseo del Bajo heading north and detours for private vehicles and heavy transport. Although it will reopen over the weekend, some traffic restrictions will continue while the planned works are completed.
The closure will begin on Friday, August 7 at 10 PM and will last until 6 AM on Saturday, August 8, during which time traffic will not be allowed on the Illia Highway heading towards the province of Buenos Aires, nor on a section of Cantilo Avenue.
This measure responds to the need to carry out specific works related to the progress of the construction of the Underpass and the new Pampa Pedestrian Ring. During the operation, motorists heading to the northern area must use Figueroa Alcorta or Del Libertador avenues as alternatives. From there, they can resume circulation on Cantilo Avenue once they have passed the Jorge Newbery Airport area.
Additionally, during this same period, the Paseo del Bajo will remain closed heading north at the height of Retiro. In this case, heavy traffic will be diverted through the corridor formed by Costanera, Güiraldes, and Cantilo to avoid congestion.
Once the main closure is over, on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, the Illia Highway will be reopened. However, the work will continue to occupy part of the roadway, so between two and three lanes on the right side will remain restricted while the tasks are completed.
In the opposite direction, that is, towards the city center, both the Illia Highway and Lugones Avenue will operate normally, with no interruptions expected.
The construction of the Pampa Underpass and Pedestrian Ring is part of the infrastructure plan promoted by the City Government to improve connectivity between the neighborhoods of northern Buenos Aires.
The intervention involves the construction of an underpass approximately 540 meters long, which will directly connect Figueroa Alcorta Avenue with Costanera. The corridor will pass under the tracks of the Belgrano Norte railway and the Lugones and Cantilo highways.
It will feature four traffic lanes, two in each direction, and will have a height of over four meters, allowing for the passage of buses, trucks, and other large vehicles.
Additionally, a metal pedestrian ring has been designed to function as a bridge. It will have a diameter of around 140 meters and a path close to 440 meters, allowing safe crossing over the highways and tracks. This will include pedestrian circulation areas and bike lanes, as well as an elevated point offering views of the Rio de la Plata.
According to official estimates, once the intervention is completed, it will directly benefit more than 17,000 people and improve the circulation of more than 38,000 vehicles per day.
