DeFiLlama Founder Loses Digital Assets to Remove Fake App
The founder of DeFiLlama intentionally lost digital assets to remove a fake app from the Apple App Store. After reporting the issue without any action taken, he connected a wallet with a small amount of assets to the fake app to create evidence of the theft. On the 15th, 0xngmi announced via X that he had downloaded the fake app and proved the theft process. DeFiLlama had reported the app to Apple for several months, but it remained available. Subsequently, 0xngmi confirmed that the fake app was draining funds from the wallet and submitted this information to Apple, leading to the app's removal a few days later. He pointed out that it is problematic that such measures had to be taken to protect users. The fake app replicated DeFiLlama's services and tricked users into entering their wallet seed phrases. 0xngmi claimed that the same operators had also distributed apps imitating other digital asset brands and explained that they passed Apple's identity verification process by using companies that had previously ceased operations. DeFiLlama postponed the release of its official app until the fake app was removed. The phishing damage did not stop at the App Store, as a recent user of Hyperliquid lost $550,000 worth of USDC through a cloned site.
