Ledger Receives Warning of Hardware Wallet Implant, Former Mt. Gox CEO Accuses Insufficient Response
Ledger received multiple reports of malicious implants months before the latest security crisis. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès stated that at least two individuals contacted Ledger starting in December 2025 to report device tampering, but no public warnings were issued. Security researcher Joe Grand reported a malicious implant found in a Nano X purchased from Lazada Thailand in August 2025 to Ledger on March 4, 2026. Ledger confirmed the findings and stated that an internal investigation would be launched, but did not proactively alert customers. Karpelès believes that the increase in reported cases and the complexity of the technology should prompt Ledger to take action and remind customers to remain vigilant. Ledger did not comment on the handling of Joe Grand's disclosure, only directing to its public statement on X. The security crisis for Ledger was made public on October 9, involving the loss of crypto assets in wallets sold by Southeast Asian authorized dealer CryptoBilis, with Ledger confirming that one affected device contained unauthorized implants. Trezor also received reports of unauthorized sellers tampering with devices.
