Maximum Power Demand Reassessed at 158.4 Gigawatts for 2040
The maximum power demand for 2040 has been reassessed at 158.4 gigawatts. The increase in demand is attributed to AI data centers and semiconductor clusters, leading companies related to nuclear power, such as Doosan Enerbility, to become subjects of analysis in the securities market once again. The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment and the General Committee for the Establishment of the 12th Basic Plan for Power Supply and Demand presented a baseline scenario of 158.4 GW and an upward scenario of 165.0 GW during a public discussion on the 20th. This marks an increase of 26.6 to 26.8 GW compared to the previous estimate of 131.8 to 138.2 GW in April. The additional demand from advanced industries is projected to be 24.3 to 24.6 GW, while AI data centers are expected to require 11.9 GW, representing increases of 20.6 GW and 7.9 GW, respectively. This plan addresses the medium- to long-term power demand from 2026 to 2040 and serves as a starting point for discussions on power plant construction and transmission network reinforcement. The profitability and stock prices of companies in the nuclear power value chain may vary depending on government plan confirmations, ordering methods, and construction schedules. Investments in AI infrastructure are also acting as significant variables in the crypto market, and the annual power consumption forecast for 2040 has been adjusted to 885.1 terawatt-hours. The expansion of the AI industry is expected to lead to discussions on power supply systems and industrial infrastructure.
