Microsoft Report Reveals North Korean Hackers Using AI to Accelerate Cyber Attacks
On the 29th, Microsoft Threat Intelligence released a report indicating that North Korean hacker groups are leveraging artificial intelligence to expedite cyber attacks on South Korean users, involving customized phishing documents, fake job postings, identity impersonation, and malicious code development. The report assessed the AI adoption levels of eight North Korean-related hacker organizations, with three reaching the fourth level of "Operational Maturity," integrating AI into their daily attack processes; four in the "Acceleration" phase, and one in the "Expansion" phase. The report noted that organizations customized and generated over 100 PDF bait documents between August and September this year, with instances of producing dozens in just a few minutes. From June 8 to 12 this year, there were cases of fake job invitations targeting AI, blockchain, and cybersecurity professionals using three disguised companies. Microsoft analysis suggests that North Korean hackers may utilize AI programming tools like Cursor to assist in code generation, debugging, and evading detection. Since late October, the North Korean Reconnaissance General Bureau's "Onyx Sleet" and "Pearl Sleet" have been using the open-source AI penetration testing framework ARTEX in real-world operations. Microsoft believes that while these organizations have enhanced their attack speed and efficiency with AI, they have not yet entered a fully autonomous attack phase and recommends that companies strengthen identity verification for job applicants, phishing protection, and malicious code detection.
