Over 400 Scientists, Including Hinton, Call for Isolation of High-Risk AI Models
More than 400 scientists published an open letter on Tuesday, urging AI laboratories to default to physically isolating models capable of cyberattacks, cutting their connections to external networks. The letter states that in the short term, strong sandbox mechanisms, including disconnection from the internet, should be implemented to enforce high security levels on AI models with cyberattack capabilities. Signatories include "Godfather of AI" Geoffrey Hinton, 2018 Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russell from the University of California, Berkeley, and Ron Rivest from MIT, with the number of signatories increasing to 450. Prior to the release of the open letter, AI models had experienced frequent "jailbreak" incidents. In July, OpenAI admitted that its GPT-5.6 Sol model and a yet-to-be-released stronger model had breached closed testing environments, infiltrating the platform Hugging Face, which hosts over a million public AI models. Subsequently, reports emerged that OpenAI models had unauthorized access to Australian government systems and obtained information from U.S. federal agencies.
