Ripple Announces Asset Record System Utilizing XRPL with CSD BR, a $4 Trillion Market Operator
Ripple Announces Asset Record System Utilizing XRPL with CSD BR
CSD BR (Central Securities Depository), a market operator supporting Brazil's major financial infrastructure, has announced a partnership with Ripple, Inc.
As a result, an advanced asset record mirroring system utilizing the XRP Ledger (XRPL) has begun full-scale operation in a real market environment. This initiative has garnered significant attention as a groundbreaking example of a regulated public blockchain being integrated into a massive national-level financial infrastructure, surpassing the framework of a mere Proof of Concept (PoC).
Background of the $4 Trillion Market Adopting XRPL
CSD BR plays an extremely important role as a regulated entity in Brazil's market, serving as a registration agency, central securities depository, and settlement institution. The total value of registered assets managed and supervised by the company exceeds 22 trillion reais (approximately 668 trillion yen), boasting a staggering scale of about $4 trillion in U.S. dollars.
A key feature of this project is that not all of the $4 trillion in assets will be directly transferred and stored on the blockchain. In the initial phase, the ownership records of certain investment funds managed by BTG Pactual, a leading investment bank in Latin America, will be targeted. These specific fund shares will be tokenized and mirrored (duplicated and synchronized) on the blockchain using the XRPL's Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) standard.
The existing robust infrastructure held by CSD BR will continue to function as the official data source (source of record) for legal ownership, custody, and settlement. The blockchain will serve as a reliable "additional verification and audit layer" for official financial records.
Phase 1 Mechanism and Benefits Beyond Testing Environment
What sets this project apart from traditional blockchain proof-of-concept experiments is that it operates in a real commercial environment rather than a simulation. In this phase, designated as Phase 1, the following practical benefits will be generated.
Efficiency through Real-Time Reconciliation
Approved financial institutions and custodians will be able to reconcile records on the blockchain with CSD BR's official database almost in real-time. This is expected to significantly reduce the extensive time and effort traditionally spent on reconciliation tasks in the financial industry.
Maintaining Strict Compliance and Governance
Despite being a public chain, a centralized management system and compliance with regulations are firmly ensured. All participants are subject to strict KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) checks. Additionally, CSD BR retains the authority to impose restrictions on the holders and transfers of tokenized assets, freeze assets, and cancel transactions in response to requests from regulatory authorities or courts.
Future Prospects Moving from Mirroring to Native Issuance
The mirroring of records and the efficiency of audits in Phase 1 are merely the first steps. Both companies are looking towards the next step of directly issuing and trading financial assets (native issuance) on the XRPL based on the achievements and data obtained from the current infrastructure operations.
Specifically, the future targets under consideration include real economy-based securities such as Real Estate Receivables Certificates (CRI) and Agribusiness Receivables Certificates (CRA), which are extremely important in Brazil's bond market. If realized, this partnership will evolve dramatically from mere record mirroring to a full-fledged capital market infrastructure on-chain.
Ripple has been globally promoting comprehensive infrastructure development for institutional investors, from custody functions to asset tokenization. Recently, it has steadily built a track record in projects involving major financial giants like Mastercard, Ondo Finance, and J.P. Morgan, completing the redemption of tokenized U.S. Treasury bonds on the XRPL while utilizing traditional banking payment networks in cash leg processes.
This collaboration with CSD BR is likely to serve as a global benchmark case demonstrating how public blockchain technology can integrate with existing financial systems that have strict regulatory environments and massive market scales, creating new value.
