U.S. National Debt Reaches $40 Trillion, Approaching 124% of GDP
The U.S. national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, reaching a level close to 124% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). As of August 20, the national debt exceeded $40 trillion, occurring approximately five months after surpassing $39 trillion and $38 trillion. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reported that real GDP increased at an annual rate of 1.5% in the second quarter of 2026. When comparing national debt to GDP figures, the debt-to-GDP ratio is approximately 123.3%, which rounds to 124%. According to data from the U.S. Treasury, the 30-year bond yield was 5.30% on August 17, 5.28% on August 18, and 5.17% on August 19, showing a slight decline near its peak but still related to the debate over fiscal costs. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects a federal deficit of $1.9 trillion for the fiscal year 2026, with net interest expenditures expected to rise to $1 trillion in 2026 and $2.1 trillion in 2036. This increase in interest expenditures is impacting the government's ability to maintain existing spending. In the crypto market, interpretations linking Bitcoin (BTC) to 'debasement transactions' are emerging, reflecting interest in alternative assets amid concerns over currency value depreciation. The record of the U.S. national debt reaching $40 trillion is also acting as a structural indicator for Korean investors.
