What happened to ai16z, the $2.4 billion AI token declared dead?
Delta Charlie Delta. Ai16z, on the other hand, did not even have the dignity of resistance: it was its own founder who ultimately pulled the plug. On August 5, Shaw Walters announced the closure of the ElizaOS foundation and advised remaining holders to sell their tokens. Here’s a look back at the mechanics of a collapse that took a year and a half to unfold. Key points of this article:
- Ai16z, an AI-driven DAO project, was launched in October 2024 on the Solana blockchain.
- In August 2026, Shaw Walters announced the closure of the ElizaOS foundation after accusations of centralized governance and a catastrophic collapse in the token's value.
October 2024: ai16z launches the dream of an AI-driven DAO
The project starts on Solana in October 2024 under the name ai16z, a not-so-subtle nod to the venture capital fund a16z (Andreessen Horowitz). The idea was an autonomous AI agent built on the open-source Eliza framework, designed to make venture capital investment decisions without human intervention.
The token soared to a $2.5 billion market cap in January 2025, fueled by the hype around "AI agents," a wave of tokens that promised to run funds or businesses via bots rather than humans.
Under legal pressure from Andreessen Horowitz, who did not appreciate seeing their name used without permission, the framework was renamed ElizaOS in early 2025. The ticker $ai16z survived the name change.
The lawsuit that drained the treasury
Everything changed in April 2026. The Burwick Law firm filed a class action against Eliza Labs, accusing Walters of selling ai16z as the governance token of an "autonomous and AI-driven" venture fund, while decisions were actually controlled by a handful of insiders.
Nothing particularly original in the accusation: the promise of algorithmic autonomy masked, as often in this sector, a very human and concentrated governance. Walters eventually settled the matter by giving up the remaining treasury of the foundation, lacking the means to continue the legal battle to the end.
On August 5, Walters himself spoke on X in a lengthy post: no more buybacks, no more support measures on the supply, the ElizaOS foundation is closing down completely. The token, which peaked at $2.4 billion, is now valued at around $2.3 million. A 97% drop that is not just a simple market dip: it is the programmed end of a project that has no structure behind it anymore.
A founder who claims to have never sold
Walters also defended himself against any personal enrichment at the expense of holders, a point that The Defiant confirmed in its report of the announcement: he claims to have never sold his own ai16z and only received a salary comparable to that of other engineers on the team. He intends to continue developing the Eliza framework, but without ever launching a token behind it again. A way to save the technical tool while abandoning the financial packaging that had brought it success, then its downfall.
The story of ai16z thus joins that of a good part of the "AI agent" tokens from 2024-2025: a promise of autonomy that mainly sold speculation on the narrative of AI agents, not a product that worked on its own. On Solana, the memecoin and AI ecosystem has seen several waves of this kind, each ending in roughly the same way: a peak of euphoria, a lawsuit, and a founder closing shop while explaining that he never touched the treasury.
