Bitcoin's Annual Returns Concentrated on Few Trading Days, Long-Term Holding Outperforms Timing Trades

Analysis shows that from 2010 to 2026, Bitcoin's annual returns are primarily concentrated on a very small number of trading days. Industry experts believe that long-term holding may be more advantageous than frequent timing trades. Data indicates that in 11 out of the past 18 years, excluding the top 10 trading days of the year, profitable years would turn into losses. For example, in 2019, Bitcoin rose 94% for the year, but excluding the best 10 days, it would have fallen 40% for the year; from 2026 to date, Bitcoin has dropped about 9%, and if the best 5 days are excluded, the decline would expand to about 36%. Andre Dragosch, Head of Research at Bitwise Europe, pointed out that Bitcoin spends most of its time in sideways and consolidation phases, with major gains concentrated on a few explosive trading days, making it extremely difficult to accurately hit these timing points. Holding for a longer period is more important than timing. Adam Haeems, Head of Asset Management at Tesseract Group, also mentioned that on February 5, 2026, Bitcoin fell about 14% in a single day and rose about 12% the next day, indicating that attempting to avoid downturns for excess returns may risk missing rapid rebounds. With the increase in spot ETFs, institutional funding, and corporate balance sheet allocations, Bitcoin's daily volatility has generally decreased, but market returns still exhibit characteristics of concentrated explosive phases.
