Nevada Approves Cap of 5,000 Tesla Robo-Taxis
The Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) has approved Tesla's application for a network of autonomous vehicles in Clark County. The initial cap for Tesla is set at a maximum of 5,000 vehicles for the first 12 months. Tesla is set to unveil its production model of the robo-taxi, called Cybercab, on September 3 in Austin, Texas, which will not have a steering wheel or brake pedals. The Cybercab is designed as a two-seater electric vehicle intended for autonomous driving. Currently, modified Model Ys are being used for Tesla's robo-taxi service. On the 21st, the NTA approved applications for autonomous vehicle networks from Tesla, Waymo, and Aviari Services, with the approved area being Clark County. Tesla can operate up to 5,000 fully autonomous vehicles, while Waymo and Aviari Services can each operate up to 1,000. However, the number of permitted vehicles does not necessarily reflect the actual number deployed, as Tesla's Cybercab chief engineer described a realistic expectation of around 2,500 vehicles for deployment. Clark County is a region where demand from downtown Las Vegas and the airport intersects, serving as a testing ground for robo-taxi operators but raising concerns of oversupply for existing taxi and limousine operators. TechCrunch reported that local taxi and limousine businesses are worried about oversupply and congestion.
