Arthur Hayes Links 2008 Bank Bailouts to the Birth of Bitcoin
In a video interview released by Altcoin Daily on August 23, 2026, and relayed by Wu Blockchain, Arthur Hayes stated that the U.S. bank bailouts of 2008 helped give rise to Bitcoin. The BitMEX co-founder believes that the emergence of this cryptocurrency is a response to the loss of trust triggered by Washington's actions during the financial crisis.
According to Hayes, in the case of Bear Stearns, Washington did not provide direct bailouts but instead supported the bank through large loans, arranging for JP Morgan to acquire the bank for $2, which he views as beneficial to the buyer. He also added that after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, regulators set aside free market logic. Hayes noted that top executives from large banks went to Washington, leaving with about $700 billion of taxpayer money, while Goldman bankers retained their bonuses, and ordinary people lost their homes.
In Hayes's view, this process signifies a rupture in the U.S. commitment to "sound money." It is from this point that he connects the 2008 crisis to the birth of Bitcoin, describing this digital currency as a reaction to the loss of trust in the traditional financial system and the measures taken by public authorities at the time.
The content relayed by Wu Blockchain focuses on Hayes's historical interpretation of Bitcoin's origins. Thus, it provides a political and monetary perspective on the emergence of this cryptocurrency; in his account, Bitcoin is a result of an environment where the losses of the financial system were socialized, while part of the banking sector preserved its own interests.
In the current context, these remarks reinforce one of the most common narratives surrounding Bitcoin: that its birth is related to distrust of banks, governments, and the interventionist models employed during the crisis. However, this relationship is presented by Hayes as his own interpretation of those events and the historical significance of this cryptocurrency.
