Autistici/Inventati Faces Financial Blockade After Being Designated as Terrorists by the U.S.
Autistici/Inventati, an Italian organization providing digital services since 2001, was included on August 26 in the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). The organization is accused of providing technological infrastructure to extremist groups, which it denies. Despite the pressure on its banking services, Autistici/Inventati has not turned to bitcoin to safeguard its funding. Its members stated that they have never accepted donations in bitcoin, viewing it as a form of financial speculation. Their goal is to maintain free and open services. However, Banca Etica plans to close their account following the OFAC designation, and their PayPal account has also been blocked. The organization asserts that it provides communication infrastructure and digital defense, while the U.S. considers these services as potential material support for sanctioned entities. The designation does not equate to the category of Foreign Terrorist Organization, but rather to a regime of financial sanctions. This presents a paradox: their rejection of bitcoin as speculative contrasts with the consequences of relying on financial intermediaries.
