FIFA investigates Argentina national team for Falklands flag at 2026 World Cup semifinals
FIFA has opened an investigation following the display of a flag that read "The Falklands are Argentine" by players Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso during the 2026 World Cup semifinals against England. FIFA's Disciplinary Committee outlined four articles that the Argentine Football Association (AFA) allegedly violated, including the use of a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations, inappropriate conduct, and disruption of order. The charges include discriminatory songs and gestures, delays in starting and security protocols, throwing objects, and displaying inappropriate messages. The Argentine government had requested that no flags with political content be brought into the stadium. Despite this, some fans defied the warning and brought the flag to the stadium, which was shown by the players after their 2-1 victory. Additionally, FIFA warned of possible sanctions for players involved in a scuffle at the end of the match against Spain, including Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada. The investigation also includes Spanish player Gavi. FIFA will allow time for those involved to present their position before issuing a resolution.
