Anthropic is developing a new model capable of actively inferring the true intentions behind users' vague commands. The competitive focus of AI assistant products is shifting from "understanding and executing commands" to "understanding intent."

On October 19, The Information reported that a person who has used the model revealed that this yet-to-be-released model can infer the goals users are trying to achieve even when their commands are unclear, demonstrating stronger reasoning abilities and more creative problem-solving skills.

The report did not disclose the model's name, pricing, or technical parameters such as context window. On the same day, Amir Efrati, co-founder of The Information, posted on the X platform:

Is Anthropic about to release Fable 5.5? It looks like it...

As of October 20, Anthropic's official model page still lists only four active models: Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, and Claude Haiku 5.5. Since releasing Haiku 5.5 on October 7, Anthropic has not announced any new models.

'Intent Inference' Under Vague Commands

Current mainstream large models tend to ask users for clarification or provide conservative general answers when faced with vague commands.

The key difference with Anthropic's new model is that it actively infers the most likely true goals of users when instructions are incomplete or imprecise and acts accordingly. According to reports citing a person who has used the model, it possesses stronger reasoning abilities and more creative problem-solving skills.

If the ability to infer intent from vague commands is realized, the way users interact with AI assistants will change: users will no longer need to carefully design prompts, and the model will take on more of the work of "guessing intent."

In complex task scenarios such as programming and data analysis, users' initial requirements are often incomplete. A model that can infer intent can autonomously break down tasks, fill in missing information, and deliver results when users only provide rough goals.

The timeline for the new model's release and its implementation rhythm have not yet been announced, and whether it can truly rewrite the interaction paradigm of AI assistants remains to be seen.

Anthropic and OpenAI are engaged in intense competition around the next generation of large models.

Recently, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5, emphasizing lower operating costs, with usage costs reduced by about 40% compared to previous generations; OpenAI subsequently released GPT-6 Sol and Luna about 90 minutes later, halving the calling price. Both parties are also synchronously upgrading the underlying models for programming tools, promoting the evolution of AI programming agents towards fully automated code generation.
