Trump Administration Plans to Impose Semiconductor Tariffs, Offering Exemptions for Domestic Manufacturers
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated that the Trump administration is considering a new round of import tariffs on semiconductors, potentially increasing the tax burden on foreign chips to attract more semiconductor manufacturing to the United States. These tariffs may be implemented alongside tax relief measures for companies investing in domestic manufacturing, similar to previous actions taken by the Trump administration regarding the pharmaceutical industry. Raimondo pointed out that the principle for the semiconductor industry should be that companies producing in the U.S. will receive tariff exemptions, while those not producing in the U.S. will be subject to tariffs. Trump had previously imposed a 25% tariff on certain advanced semiconductors and ordered additional import tariffs on these chips in January of this year. The scope of the new tariffs may expand from semiconductors themselves to products containing chips, affecting the import of data center servers and consumer electronics.
