What Is TLT? Long-Term Treasury Bonds After the Midterm Election

TLT, the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF, invests primarily, Treasury bonds with more than 20 years to maturity. Its price generally moves in the opposite direction to long-term Treasury yields: falling yields tend to support TLT, while rising yields can weigh on its price. The materials provided cite a 30-day SEC yield of about 5.35% and an average effective duration of approximately 14.90 years as of early November 2026. The SEC yield is not a guaranteed return, and fund distributions can change.

TLT’s recent rebound to changing fiscal expectations and a pullback in Treasury yields after the U.S. midterm election. With Democrats holding a majority in Congress, markets reassessed the likelihood of large-scale fiscal spending and future Treasury supply. Long-term yields also eased from earlier highs. Because TLT is sensitive to long-term interest rates, lower yields generally support its price. A decline in international oil prices to a two-month low, amid changing geopolitical conditions, also eased some inflation concerns and supported long-duration bonds.

TLT’s potential income comes with significant interest-rate risk. Its cited average effective duration of 14.90 years means the fund’s price may fluctuate substantially if long-term yields rise. Inflation expectations, fiscal deficits, and Federal Reserve policy can also affect Treasury prices.
